Book Review: Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

I recently started to learn paragliding and this special book was gifted to me by my Instructors, Avi and Anita. I have re-read this book after many years, but now with a fresh perspective and newfound love of flying.

With my Paragliding Instructors Avi and Anita from Temple Pilots.

A note from Avi Malik (Temple pilots)

This 1970s book is one of the most widely-known classics inspiring many to live their dreams. The author Richard Bach himself was fighter pilot, and has written this book based on his experiences and the freedom he feels on flying.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull is a story of a rebel seagull exploring his life’s meaning by achieving perfection in flying. Jonathan is a rebel, unlike other seagulls who flew only to scout for food for life, for him flying itself was life.

The story is about a journey of finding your calling and believing that you can fulfill it. This beautiful story highlights the importance of fulfilling our ambitions even if these goals make you a rebel.

The few lines from the story will remain forever etched in my heart.

When Jonathan asks Chaing: Is this Heaven? Chaing responds, “Heaven is not a place, and it is not a time. Heaven is being perfect”.

=> “If our friendship depends on this like space and time, then when we finally overcome space and time, we’ve destroyed our own brotherhood! But overcome space and all we have left is Here. Overcome time and all we have left is Now.”

A timeless book for all of us searching for meaning and purpose.
