Book Review: Learn like a Pro – By Barbara Oakley and Olav Schewe
- Print length: 125 pages
- Publisher: St Martin’s Essentials New York
- Publication: 2021
The subtitle of the book: Science Based tools to become better and anything
I have read many books and articles on how to be better at learning. But “Learn Like a Pro” is definitely the most simple in conveying the key concepts. It is a well written book, and specially helpful for all students (be it from school or college). It is packed with practical evidence-based advise.
I had know many concepts mentioned in the book, but this time I was able to practice then as well, as I read the book.
Key Takeaways from Learn Like a Pro by Barbara Oakley and Olav Schewe
My key takeaways from the book Learn Like a Pro:
-
- – Remove distractions and study in time chunks with breaks in between.
- – Long term retention happens when we rest or sleep after focused learning session.
- – Using diffused mode: When we are not actively thinking on the ideas, but are able to connect the dots while doing mindless chores like walking, bathing. (Eureka Moments).
- – To achieve long term goals, also have Process Goals and Milestone goals. Process Goal example: Reading 10 pages daily. Milestone goal example: complete 1 chapter in 3 days.
- – Skimming through the chapter before you read helps in better comprehension. Check Headings, Bold text, Images, charts, summary, questions etc
The best part about reading “Learn Like a Pro” was, the support and the plan Aniket Rai has put as the part of his ReadAR 2.0 Cohort.
For the first time I have actually read all the End Notes and the bibliography on Aniket’s recommendation. And I found few very good references to read.
It’s unfortunate that no-one teaches us “HOW to learn” when we are in school. Schools focus on WHAT to learn.
This book should definitely be read by all students. For others, this book will offer many insights on improving learning and reading abilities.
